Bringing Kapampangan contemporary art into a wider conversation on the power of images, Vision Doers Art Collective presents “This Image Refuses You,” a thought-provoking exhibition curated by Kapampangan artist Chan Alvarez for Art Luzon 2026.

Running from October 10 to 18 at Booth 01, Bulwagang Kanlahi, Diwa ng Tarlac, the exhibition brings together the works of Arnel Garcia, Chan Alvarez, Chelssie Pan, Chris Pan, Crystal Tranquilino, Jascha Tolentino, and Ron Salazar, exploring how images can challenge perception, resist easy interpretation, and question the power of the viewer’s gaze.

Anchored on an exhibition text by Justin Cruzana, the presentation draws from Susan Sontag’s reflections on photography and humanity’s impulse to understand the world through images. Rather than simply offering themselves for consumption, the artworks challenge viewers to confront the limits of what they see and assume.

Through abstraction, depersonalization, and visually overwhelming compositions, the artists resist conventional readings, asserting that art need not yield its meaning immediately or conform to the expectations of its audience.

At the heart of the exhibition is a compelling proposition: images are not merely objects to be observed, interpreted, or possessed. They can also resist the gaze, reclaim their agency, and unsettle the relationship between the artwork and its beholder.

Under Alvarez’s curatorial direction, “This Image Refuses You” offers a platform for artists to interrogate representation and perception, demonstrating how contemporary art can create space for ambiguity, discomfort, and deeper reflection.

The exhibition forms part of Art Luzon 2026, a gathering that brings together 400 artists, 800 crochet makers and weavers, and 14 exhibitors, highlighting the breadth of creative practices and artistic expression.

Through the collective’s presentation, Kapampangan artists contribute to a broader discourse on contemporary art, affirming the region’s place in an evolving cultural landscape where images do more than show the world. They challenge audiences to reconsider how they see it.
