Huge explosion of used-oil plant jolts Pampanga folk

SAN SIMON, Pampanga – A powerful explosion rocked the Sunflare Industrial Supply Corp. (Sunflare) on Quezon Road in Barangay San Pablo Libutad here at about 11:30 p.m. last Tuesday.

The San Simon police said in a report yesterday that the oil refinery of the firm that processes used oil into diesel was the source of the explosion that caused a huge fireball in the sky.

Residents of the capital City of San Fernando and Sta. Rita reported hearing the blast some 15 to 20 kilometers away from this town.

No one was reported hurt in the incident as it occurred late into the night long after workers had left, the police said.

“Initial investigation disclosed that the oil refinery of the establishment exploded and caused fire. There was no reported casualty and as of 12:10 a.m. responding BFP personnel declared fire out.,” the police report said.

It said Sunflare is owned by one Aedy Yang, 35, “a Chinese national, married and resident of lakeshore, Mexico, Pampanga.”

As of yesterday, police and fire department officials were still investigating the cause of the blast.
