ANGELES CITY—They call and describe him with many names, but Pampanga Gov. Eddie Panlilio preferred to describe boxing champion Manny Pacquiao as the current symbol of Filipino culture.
Speaking before hundreds of participants in the 1st national conference on Bulacan and Pampanga’s history, culture and the arts held here yesterday, he said Pacquiao was able to unite the Filipinos in every punch he received and unleashed.
“Di nga ba’t ang kahit na ang military at Abu Sayyaf ay tumitigil sa kanilang madugong labanan upang bigyan laman ng daan ang kanyang sariling pakikipagtunggali? At di nga ba’t ang kalinangan ang siyang dapat magbuklod sa ating lahat,” the govbernor said in his opening speech.
He noted that days after Pacquiao defeated Ricky Hatton, office staff were still talking about that historic second round knockdown.
“Aking naisip, sana ay ganito rin ang pagpapahalaga at pagbibigay ng panahon natin sa ating kalinangan,” Panlilio said.
He cited a writer who once wrote that culture is a form of a social control because it touches the heart, unites and gives social identity.
Panlilio said that in Pacquiao’s triumphs, Filipinos across the world identify themselves with the boxing champion, including his relatives abroad who never set foot in the country.
“The reason is simple. Itinataas ni Manny ang pagkilala ng mga banyaga sa atin,” Panlilio said
As this developed, Bulacan Provincial Administrator Pearly Mendoza announced during the conference that Governor Joselito Mendoza approved the Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution designating June 3 as the Bulakenyo-Kapampangan Friendship Day.
This resolution is in reference with the Battle of Bangkusay on June 3, 1571 where ancient Filipino warriors from Hagonoy in Bulacan and Macabebe in Pampanga fought the Spaniards.
Historians claims that it was the first recorded Filipino uprising against Spain, that is aimed at gaining freedom.
However, the said battle end up in tragedy the datus from the two coastal towns were either killed or captured during the said battle.
According to Mendoza the said event should always be remembered by today’s generation that in the past, Bulakenyo and Kapampangan warriors fought side by side.
Panlilio said the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Pampanga should also pass a similar resolution for the concelebration of the friendship between the two provinces.
