MARIVELES, Bataan — GNPower Dinginin Ltd. Co. (GNPD) launched Thursday at its coal-fired power plant in Barangay Alas-Asin what it describes as safety culture revolution, placing safety as the most important factor in its operation.

“We are producing this significant power for the Luzon area but if we cannot do our work safe, then we cannot manage our business. So again,  safety first – that is our utmost importance,” GNPD plant manager Anton Besaris said.

GNPD is considered as the biggest coal-fired power plant in the country with its two units having a gross capacity of 725 megawatts each or total of 1,450 MW. It has net capacity of 668 MW per unit or total net capacity of 1,336 MW.

Besaris admitted that they still have a young organization being in commercial operation for just over a year. “We need to mature our operation and maintenance organization and all the departments from a safety perspective.  So that is about our behavior, that is about our awareness, that is about knowledge, experience, communication, commitment.”

He urged all to work for safety and described the launching of their safety revolution as one big step to really develop their organization where, he said, they are now together to the real next level.

“Again, whether it is a contractor or our personnel, we want everybody to go home the same as they arrive here – unhurt,” the plant manager said.

He said the event was just a start. “We as the senior management of this power plant, we will do everything within our capacity to mature our people, to support our people, to support our contractors and creating the safe place for our own.”

“This is just a kick-off meeting so let us call this the big event as a starter because you see a lot of people here at the workshop but also there are I think around 200 people online maybe following us because we didn’t have a big space to accommodate all our colleagues here,” he noted.

Besaris concluded that the kickoff was only once but he guaranteed that they will have once-a-month facility meeting and safety will be one of their most important topics because they are self-aware, they know where they stand, and there is much room for improvement.
