MARIVELES, Bataan — A former police colonel and his 21-year-old son died Sunday afternoon in an ambush by still unidentified number of assailants while walking towards a cockpit arena here after having parked their black car.

Supt. Crizalde Conde, Mariveles police chief, said retired police superintendent Napoleon Cauayan, 58 and son known as Napnap died on the spot in front of the Mariveles cockpit arena in Barangay Balon Anito in the shooting that took place at about 2:30 p.m.

The elder Cauayan was former chief of the Highway Patrol Group in Region 3 while Napnap was later identifi ed as Napoleon Christoper Cauayan, 21, only child of Napoleon and Rachel Cauayan of Barangay Baseco, Mariveles.

“Patuloy pa ang imbestigasyon. Wala pang klarong detalye sa mga suspects. Agad kaming naglagay ng checkpoint at naghahanap kami ng CCTV sa paligid upang makatulong sa imbestigasyon,” Conde said.

Some bystanders who refused to be identified gave different details. Some said there were three to four armed men in a black vehicle while some said there were more with some on board motorcycles.

The father was walking some meters ahead of his son when they were fired at several times on their heads and bodies. Both were carrying a fighting cock each in separate boxes.

Cauayan had a .45 pistol in a holster tucked in his waistline but was not able to use it.

While watching Scene of the Crime Operatives process the crime scene and the bodies of her husband and only son, Rachel Cauayan cried out loud.

“Ang anak ko hindi adik, hindi umiinom, hindi naninigarilyo, mabait na bata. Napakabait ng anak ko, marespeto, bakit siya pinatay? Mamatay na rin sana sila, wala silang awa,” she said.

After SOCO finished processing the crime scene, Rachel continued crying while embracing the bodies of her husband and son.

“Uubusin ko pera ko, mamatay lang sila,” she said referring to those who killed her loved ones.

“Maraming death threats, matapang ang kuya ko. Sa mga nakakita, sana makipagtulungan kayo,” Marie Cauayan, sister of Napoleon, said.
