A SIMPLE and solemn rite was conducted at the Capitol’s Governor’s Office last Saturday, July 25, when former Tarlac city Administrator Jerome “Dr. J.” Lapeña and former city Councilor Arsenio “Baby” Lugay II took their oath as new members of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition [NPC] before Governor Victor Yap, provincial vice chairman of the party in the province of Tarlac.

Lapeña and Lugay, both former close-allies of Tarlac city Mayor Gelacio Manalang Manalang, are the latest in the string of politicians to join the bandwagon of the biggest and strongest political party in the province.

Most of the incumbent officials in the province belong to the NPC including Representatives Susan Yap of the second district and Noel Villanueva of the third district. Rep. Yap acts as the caretaker of the first district after the untimely demise of first district Rep. Enrique “Henry” Cojuangco in May this year.

In a statement, Gov. Yap said that he is thankful that Lapeña and Lugay chose to join the NPC.

“I am thankful that Jerome and Baby preferred the NPC. I believe that the two can contribute much to the further advancement of the party,” Gov. Yap said.

The NPC was founded in 1992 by Ambassador Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco Jr. as a vehicle for his presidential bid.

“I am glad that I was able to come back to my original party. I am grateful to the leadership of the NPC most especially to Boss Danding and Gov. Vic,” Lugay said while Lapena said, “I am fortunate that the party born on principles accepted me as a member. Thank you to both Boss Danding and Gov. Vic.”

Witnessing the simple oath taking were Tarlac city Vice Mayor Anne Belmonte, city Councilors Emily Ladera-Facunla and Eddie Tañedo and former city Councilor Weng Quiroz.

“In behalf of the members of the NPC in the city council, we welcome the two gentlemen to the party,” Belmonte said.
