April 22 was a red-letter day, especially for environmentalists and advocates, for the observance of the international Earth Day which started in the 70s. This year SM City Pampanga was very active in promoting the activity and the mall put up an exhibit to commemorate the event, in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
The theme for this year’s Earth Day in the Philippines is “Tubig at Lupa Buhayin, Hangin Linisin, Batas Tuparin.”
In San Fernando the privately-led artist group called OK Musica, composed of Kapampangan composers and musicians mostly, led the City in celebrating Earth Day with a bang – through an artists’ gathering cum concert dubbed Earth Day Jam held at the Robinsons Starmills Pampanga.
Music and the arts are very potent in promoting environmental awareness and it was overwhelming to see our Kapampangan artists committing themselves to a very good cause – that of helping save our planet.
The spirit of volunteerism is very much alive among our local artists. The Earth Day Jam was participated by no less than Ms. Ara Muna, a true icon of Kapampangan pop music. Other outstanding artists who actively participated were stand up comedian Jeff Ganda, heartthrobs Harvey Quiwa and Bin Bondoc of K4Ad, young talents Bea Austria, Dindi Guzon, Ces Esguerra, Mary Ann Tiongson, Portia Hizon, Jeneal Mariano, composers Robert Odejar and Miriam Sandico among others.
Excellent performances were given by Teatro Fernandino’s Sining Kapampangan ethnic band, pioneer Kapampangan bands Marcos Cronies, Grass Roots and Julian Katarungan.
While the performances were ongoing, the DENR Regional Public Affairs Office showed various slides on facts about environmental issues. The City Tourism Office and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office spearheaded the distribution of posters and instructional materials on proper solid waste management as enforced by the City Government.
The event was organized by OK Musica with support from the City Government of San Fernando thru Mayor Oca Rodriguez and City Councilors Jimmy Lazatin, Reden Halili and Ruping Dumlao, Robinsons Starmills Pampanga and Bright FM 91.9. Other sponsors were Pampanga’s Best, ALKA Hardware, Jollibee and Pizza Hut.
Kudos to all artists who supported the event! And congratulations to the steering committee for the job well done, specially tito Benny Guinto, kuya Landlee Quiwa, kuya Dennis Lalata, tito Rey Pineda, kuya Oji Salamat and Don de Dios.
