SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has awarded ₱2.74 million to the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) for the development of a smart hybrid tricycle under Project ANGELA.

This funding was formally awarded during a turnover ceremony at the NEUST Metals and Engineering Innovation Center in the Sumacab Campus, supporting the Science City of Muñoz’s efforts to advance smart, sustainable, and technology-driven public transportation.

Implemented under the DOST Smart and Sustainable Communities Program, Project ANGELA is a collaboration among DOST, NEUST, and the local government of the Science City of Muñoz to address emerging transportation needs through science and technology solutions.

DOST Nueva Ecija said that the project aims to develop a next-generation hybrid tricycle sidecar system that will provide commuters with a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable transport experience while supporting the government’s push for sustainable and livable communities.

Department of Science and Technology Nueva Ecija Provincial Director Leidi Mel Sicat and Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training Jean Guillasper lead the turnover ceremony for ₱2.74 million in support of the implementation of Project ANGELA, which aims to develop a smart hybrid tricycle sidecar system for safer, cleaner, and more sustainable public transportation in the Science City of Muñoz. The prototype will feature an energy-efficient 12-volt air-conditioning system, ergonomic seating, and an air purification system with UV-C sterilization.

It will also incorporate smart distance sensors, a GPS-enabled emergency response system, and a digital booking and fare management platform.

These innovations are expected to improve passenger comfort, safety, health, and operational efficiency while demonstrating how locally developed technologies can respond to everyday community needs.

The initiative supports the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in harnessing science, technology, and innovation to improve public services, strengthen local capabilities, and build more sustainable and resilient communities.

Through Project ANGELA, DOST and NEUST seek to demonstrate how innovation can transform local transportation and improve the quality of life for commuters. (CLJD/CNG, PIA Region 3-Nueva Ecija)
