LICAB, Nueva Ecija – A 40-year-old policeman was gunned down by still unidentified assassin in Barangay Sta. Maria here shortly before 6 p.m. Friday, police reported.
The cop, whose rank was not immediately disclosed, was identified as Rodel Umengan, assigned at the Morong Police Station in Bataan, and resident of Barangay Sta. Maria.
Investigation disclosed that the victim was at the passenger seat of a tricycle on his way home when repeatedly fired at by a motorcycle-riding man who came from the opposite direction.
The suspect, investigators said, even alighted his motorcycle and pursued the victim in a running tricycle.
The gunman then snatched another motorcycle to escape. But witnesses said he transferred to an AUV.
Responders rushed Umengan to the rural health unit here and transferred to a hospital in Cabanatuan City where he was declared dead upon arrival.
Follow up investigation for possible apprehension of the suspect is being conducted, police said.
