Coast Guard undertakes mangrove planting

    LIMAY, Bataan- In support of and contribution to the protection of the environment, the Philippine Coast Guard Bataan Station on Saturday led in the planting of mangrove saplings in the seaside village of Lamao in Limay town.

    Lt. Junior Grade Geronimo Tuvilla, Coast Guard station commander in the Port of Lamao, said they also donated six garbage drums to the barangay through its chairman Cesar Canete.

    He said that 1,000 saplings of mangroves were planted in more than 1,250 square meters of land in Sitio Riverside, Lamao with 150 people coming from various sector participating.

    The participants came from the Coast Guard Bataan Station, Coast Guard Sub-station in Corregidor, Coast Guard Detachment in Mariveles, Lamao barangay officials, teachers and students from the Lamao National High School and residents and fisherfolk of Sitio Riverside.

    “We are happy for the concern of the Philippine Coast Guard to the environment,” residents of Lamao said.

    The Coast Guard Bataan Station also conducted an information drive regarding maritime safety, security and environmental issues including the recent Supreme Court decision in the removal of fishpens in Manila Bay under G.R Nos. 171947-48.

    Tuvilla said they also discussed the specific functions of other government agencies in the rehabilitation and clean-up operations of Manila Bay.

    The Coast Guard also handed to the enjoyment of children in the seaside sitio 100 plastic bags of assorted candies and chocolates.

    “We must all do our share on how to further safeguard our environment,” Tuvilla urged every one.
