CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – “Untimely.”
This was how Senior Board Member Crisostomo “Cris” Garbo described the plunder cases filed by Gov. Eddie Panlilio against two former governors before the Office of the Ombudsman in Quezon City on Monday.
Garbo said Panlilio should have filed the plunder charges against former governor, now Sen. Manuel “Lito” Lapid and his son, Former Gov. Mark Lapid, “a long time ago.”
“At most, one year after assuming his post as governor in 2007,” added Garbo.
He also questioned the “sincerity” of Panlilio in filing the plunder cases against the Lapids in connection with alleged anomalies in lahar quarry funds during their gubernatorial terms in this province.
“Why only now? What’s his motive?” asked Garbo. He added that “you could not help but doubt Panlilio’s move considering he expressed his intention seek a national post, including the presidency.”
The elder Lapid, in loose talks in the province, is reportedly asking Garbo to run as his vice governor in 2010. Sen. Lapid announced his bid to seek the governorship in Pampanga, which he held for three straight terms.
Garbo disclosed that he and Lapid “has yet to have formal talks about their plans for 2010.” He added that he is focused on getting re-elected.
“There are many considerations if I will accept the offer of Sen. Lapid, assuming there is. I have to talk to my leaders and consult many people,” said Garbo.
Also named as respondents in the plunder case include former provincial administrator Fidel Arcenas and former provincial treasurers Jovito Sabado and Vergel Yabut. )
