Anti-gun campaign nets 2

    CABANATUAN CITY – Two persons were held for illegal guns in separate anti-criminality checkpoints here as police intensified its campaign against unlicensed firearms.

    The suspects, Rommel Juliano, 42, a an electronic technician from Barangay Dinarayat, Talavera, Nueva Ecija was arrested for alleged possession of a cal. 45 pistol with ammunition while Rogelio Vegiga, 26, tricycle driver of Barangay Magsaysay Sur here yielded a loaded cal. 38, according to Supt. Eli Depra, city police director.

    Investigation showed police operatives were conducting spot check along Maharlika Highway, Sangitan Este at about 9:45 p.m. when they noticed Juliano was about to enter a fastfood with a handgun tucked on his waist.

    “He passed by the crew of mobile car 408 with a gun visibly tucked in his waist,” Depra said, saying this prompted the lawmen to hold a spot check. But the suspect failed to present a “valid document.”

    He presented instead a firearm license under the name of a certain Ricardo Pile of Northville Subd., Virgen Delas Flores, Baliuag, Bulacan, he added.

    Juliano said he bought the gun last week and documents were being processed.

    Vegiga, on the other hand, was arrested in an anti-criminality checkpoint by the local police and elements of 3rd Regional Public safety Battalion while driving a tricycle (9982 CZ). He also failed to produce necessary documents, police reported.

    Both suspects were charged for violation of Republic Act 8294 or illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, according to Depra.

    Earlier, police declared an all-out war against loose firearms in the rundown to the 2013 midterm elections.
