THE RECENTLY crowned Miss Universe is Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa. Outsmarting her 91 fellow candidates, the newly proclaimed beauty queen shone the brightest with her winning answer in the questionand-answer portion of Miss Universe 2017, held at The AXIS, Planet Hollywood, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Asked “what quality in yourself are you most proud of and how will you apply that quality to Miss Universe,” the 22-year-old beauty queen highlighted the importance of confidence in one’s self.
Nel-Peters told host Steve Harvey, “As Miss Universe, you have to be confident with who you are as an individual.
“A Miss Universe is a woman that has overcomed many fears and by that, she was able to help other women overcome their fears.
“She is a woman that nothing is able too much to ask for.
“And I think that is exactly who I am. Thank you.”
During the question-and-answer portion after the announcement of the Final 5, the question she got was “Women make up 49 percent of the global workplace. What do you believe is the most important issue facing women in the workplace today and why?”
The Business Management degree holder confidently answered, “In the workplaces, women get paid 75 percent of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours, and I do not believe that that is right.
“I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world. Thank you.” With her win tonight, Demi-Leigh ended a nearly fourdecade drought for her country.
The last time they brought home the crown was when Margaret Gardiner won Miss Universe 1978.
Prior to the competition, judges all agreed that the Miss Universe 2017 must possess both “poise and intelligence.”

DESPITE her loss, Miss Philippines-Universe Rachel Peters gets over flowing support from her kababayan.
All the Filipinos are so proud with her performance in the just-concluded 66th Miss Universe pageant. Even celebrities and personalities sent their warmest greetings for the 26-year-old Bicolana beauty.
Among the stars who rallied support for the Philippine candidate was ABS-CBN comedian-TV host Vice Ganda. From start to finish, the It’s Showtime host convinced his followers to support Rachel. Some of his wittiest tweets read: “Go Rachel! Wag mo na sila antayin. Mag long gown ka na anak! Ako na bahala sa papalag.”
Senator Grace Poe, on the other hand, described the beauty queen as a “portrait of beauty and perseverance on stage.”
She added, “with or without the crown, you already have won the hearts of the Filipinos.”
Anne Curtis tweeted, “Making it to the top 10 is such a feat!” Miss World 1993 Second Princess Ruff a Gutierrez still congratulated Rachel for her “amazing” performance.
    WHY?
Other personalities also thought Rachel had a huge chance in bringing home this year’s crown. Miss Universe Philippines 2010 Venus Raj seemed to question Miss Universe’s decision.
Preggy Saab Magalona said, “Sayang, I wanted to hear #Philippines Q&A because Rachel Peters answered so well sa Bb. Pilipinas :(“ Gretchen Ho said on her tweet, “I really thought she had it there.”
