CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando here was installed with a historical marker by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines on Aug. 15.

The NHC said the marker is in recognition of the significant role the church, established by Augustinian friars in 1755, played in the country’s history. It served as the headquarters of the revolutionary army of Pampanga in 1898; torched to the ground on orders of Gen. Antonio Luna in 1899 to deprive American forces of its use; and the launching ground of President Manuel L. Quezon’s social justice program in 1939.

Prior to its elevation as a cathedral, the church served as a parish dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

Marker cites cathedral’s contribution to Philippine history.

“It is fitting that this honor coincides with the feast day celebration of Our Lady’s Assumption,” the archdiocese said.

The unveiling ceremony was led by Archbishop Florentino Lavarias, NHCP chairman Dr. Emmanuel Calairo, and Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag,

Historical markers are installed by the NHCP in places that signify important events, persons, structures, and institutions in the Philippines’ national and local histories.

They are also installed to serve as a reminder of the nation’s rich cultural heritage and are intended to educate and inform the public about significant historical events. With CBCP News/Photos: Archdiocese of San Fernando
