TARLAC CITY (PIA) — Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Tarlac confiscated defective weighing scales during a saturation drive at Capas Public Market.

The activity is part of the advocacy of the agency to promote consumer welfare and protection, and ensure the practice of accurate weighing measurements among market vendors.

DTI Tarlac Trade Industry Development Specialist Wessa Dizon said the inspection of weighing scales is conducted regularly in public markets to ensure that consumers are protected from fraudulent vendors.

Six out of 68 analog and digital weighing scales inspected were found to be defective, and were turned over to the municipal government.

Dizon reminded vendors to make sure that their weighing scales are functional and in accordance with the set standards.

“The misinterpretation of the true weight and measure of goods sold is punishable by law under Republic Act 7394 otherwise known as the Consumer Act of the Philippines,” she added.

Aside from the inspection, a briefing on Label Law was conducted to empower vendors on proper labelling and fair packaging of consumer products.

The saturation drive was conducted in partnership with the Local Price Coordinating Council, Municipal Public Order and Safety Management Office, Philippine National Police; and Tarlac Consumers Council Inc. (CLJD/TJBM-PIA 3)
