CLARK FREEPORT – India’s GMR Group in consortium with Megawide Construction Corp. has reportedly emerged as the preferred bidder for a world-class new passenger terminal at the Clark International Airport here whose groundbreaking is set for Dec. 20.

“GMR Group submitted the most competitive financial bid,” the Hindu BusinessLine reported.

No one from the Clark In- ternational Airport Corp. (CIAC) would confirm this pending the outcome of the final bidding.

GMR Group has developed and operates the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad. It recently won the concession to develop and operate Goa’s Greenfield Airport at Mopa.

The firm recently won the rights to develop and operate the Greenfi eld Airport at Heraklion, Crete, Greece in partnership with GEK Terna. The group is also developing smart cities adjacent to Delhi and Hyderabad airports.

But last week, Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) president Vivencio Dizon announced the groundbreaking rites for the new terminal on Dec. 20, to be attended by former president, now Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Hindu Businessline said the “project scope involves design, construction, testing and commissioning of a new terminal with a capacity of eight million passengers per annum. he consortium will construct the integrated terminal along with specified landside facilities such as car parks. The consortium expects to receive the Notice of Award within one week.”

The report noted that “this is the second airport project that GMR Group will be developing in the Philippines along with Megawide Construction Corp., with the consortium already operating the Mactan Cebu International Airport, the second largest airport of the Philippines, which handles 10 million passengers annually.”

It quoted Srinivas Bommidala, GMR Group head for airports, as saying that “Philippines is a focus market for GMR Group and we are confident that this win will further strengthen our position in the Philippines and help us develop a strong base for more airports in South-East Asia region. We are close to completing the construction of the new terminal at the Mactan Cebu International airport, which will be commissioned in June 2018.”

“With the local supply chain expertise we have developed over the past couple of years, we are confident that we will be able to deliver the Clark international airport project in a cost-effective manner,” he said.

GMR Infrastructure in partnership with Megawide Construction Corporation is developing Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in the Philippines.
