BALANGA CITY — The provincial government in coordination with the provincial tourism office on Tuesday launched a program pushing for smoke-free beaches in Bataan.

“This is in line with our goal of promoting a healthy community while safeguarding the environment,” said Gov. Jose Enrique Garcia III.

The governor explained that the program also aimed to protect tourists frequenting beaches in the province against the bad effect of secondhand smoke.

The program was launched in Barangay Pag-asa, Bagac where rows of resorts line the beaches adjacent to the West Philippines Sea. Private and public organizations, beach resort owners and youth volunteers pledged to see that the program is followed.

Aside from Bagac, beautiful sandy beaches in the towns of Morong and Mariveles attract visitors.

Nick Ancheta, Bagac municipal administrator, said Mayor Ramil del Rosario and beach resort owners in the town are in full support of the program.

A report from the provincial tourism office headed by former Pilar Mayor Alice Pizarro showed that 35 owners of beach resorts in Bagac attended the launching of smoke–free beaches.
