The MNTC said the portions for widening are now being filled up with materials where concrete would be laid over. When completed, the NLEx section would have three lanes on either direction.
MNTC President Rodrigo Franco also said that two more lanes are to be added to the northbound lane of the NLEx from Dau to Sta. Ines in Mabalacat City. He added that while this stretch is only four kilometers long, accidents frequently happen because its two lanes push motorists to violate regulations against overtaking.
The MNTC has allocated P5 billion for both widening projects.
Franco noted that since 2005 when MNTC marked its 10th anniversary, traffic volume along the NLEx increased by more than 50 percent.
Such traffic volume increases by 25 more percent during Holy Week, All Saints’ Day and Christmas season. This, even as the MNTC said it is also studying the expansion of the Bocaue interchange which often clogs with traffic.
