GUAGUA, Pampanga — The Department of Tourism (DOT) is inviting either experienced or budding furniture makers in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to join the First Betis Open National Furniture and Wood Carving Competition slated next month.

“Co-organized by the municipal government of Guagua in collaboration with the Betis Fiesta Committee 2014 and Betis Parish Heritage Foundation, it shall be held from December 23- 28 at the famed Betis Church. It is part of this year’s Dukit Festival,”

DOT regional director Ronaldo Tiotuico said. “The event seeks to showcase homegrown talents in a bid to promote the industry and its products to a wider international and domestic market and at the same time entice tourists to visit this part of Central Luzon,” he said.

The event coincides with the feast of St. James the Apostle, this town’s patron saint. Tiotuico said interested parties can contact Mr. Alan Mendoza at (045) 900-4496 / 0922-832- 8723 or email at lan_pm@yahoo.com before the registration deadline on Dec. 12.

He said cash prizes and trophies will be given to winners, although details were not immediately disclosed. Meanwhile, Gov. Lilia “Nanay Baby” Pineda will hand out the prizes during the judging on Dec. 28 at the Betis church in this town. Betis is known worldwide for its wood furniture and its menfolk are in demand for their woodcarving skills.
