CLARK FREEPORT – After a nationwide search for a name, the Ocean Adventure marine theme park in Subic Bay Freeport announced that the month-old female dolphin calf born under its care has been named “Lana.”
“Lana is the newest member of our Ocean Adventure family,” said Gail Laule, executive vice president of Ocean Adventure. “She’s been wonderful since we first laid our eyes on her last Aug. 31 and now I’m glad that we actually have a name for her,” she said.
Earlier, Ocean Adventure launched a nationwide online search for a name for the calf which was born to a dolphin named Hali. From the hundreds of names that were suggested, Ocean Adventure staff members voted for Lana, Laule said.
She also said Jean Balquin, Ocean Adventure laboratory manager, also endorsed the name Lana. Balquin said that ‘’ when we were asked to name the baby dolphin, our lab personnel initially came up with the name Halo. But we wanted to choose something that was synonymous with sunlight.”
“Then we found out that the name Lana suggested online meant light in Greek so it was voted on,” Balquin said.
Lana is approximately 1.25 meters long and weighs approximately 20 kilos. “She is being tended to by Ocean Adventure expert staff working around the clock to assure optimal care for mother and baby,” Balquin added.
