Poll peace pact signed in Bataan

SAMAL, Bataan — The Commission on Elections in coordination with the Philippine National Police and the Department of Interior and Local Government on Saturday conducted here the first peace covenant in the province in the May 14 elections for barangay and sangguniang kabataan candidates.

The candidates from 14 barangays in Samal in various colors of T-shirts signed the “Pangako ng Katapatan” after being briefed by lawyer Gilbert Almario, provincial election supervisor, on the dos and don’ts on campaigning.

The nine-day campaign period that started May 4 ends on May 12. Chief Inspector Emelito dela Cruz, Samal police chief, administered the Pangako ng Katapatan followed by the candidates with raised hands.

“The objective of the PNP is to have an orderly and honest elections.Sana dito honest and orderly,” Senior Supt. Marcelo Dayag, Bataan police director, said. He said that with the start of the campaign period, there was no reported untoward incident.

“Very cooperative ang mga candidates sa Bataan,” Dayag said. Senior Inspector Eric Manuel, Samal deputy police chief, said Samal is a peaceful municipality.

“Sa ngayon nagkakaroon ng signing ng peace covenant sa barangay at SK elections,” he said.

“Ang panawagan ng Commission on Elections sa mga kandidato ay huwag gawing kumplikado ang pagiging kandidato. Kailangang simple lang para huwag mabahiran ng election-related incident ang eleksiyon,” Almario said.

He said that candidates have to respect the required size of campaign materials and the places where it can only be posted.
