ANGELES CITY – Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. has recently appointed the city’s focal person for solo parents affairs to better serve the sector of solo parents here.

Lazatin appointed Rebecca Peñaranda, who is also the President of the solo parents’ community in the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Central Luzon.

“Ngayon lang tayo magkakaraoon ng focal person at opisina para sa solo parents. Dahil nakita ko na ngayong pandemya kailangan talaga silang maabot ng pamahalaan. They are part of our community, nais nating patuloy na mapangalagaan ang kanilang kapakanan at ng kanilang mga anak,” Lazatin said.

Lazatin also announced that he will fund the solo parents’ office under Peñaranda next year with P1.5 million on top of the P5 million for the social pension of registered indigent solo parents.

According to City Social Welfare Development Officer Edna Duaso, Peñaranda is already familiar and much more qualified for the work, since she has been serving at the regional level.

Duaso said this will bring to the city a more reliable access to the national level’s programs and benefits for the solo parents.

In fact, Peñaranda is now in the process of updating and organizing the database for the solo parents community in the city’s 33 barangays, upon the instructions of Mayor Lazatin.

Duaso shared that with this move, it will help the city government to identify who the solo parents in the city are and what necessary assistance can further be provided for them.

Moreover, if there is an established coordination and exchange of views between the city government and the solo parents community, they will further be heard, Duaso says.

“Lalo na po at may batas tayo na nangangalaga para sa kapakanan ng ating mga solo parents. At ayun po ang gusto ni Mayor Lazatin, ang matugunan ang kanilang mga pangangailangan,” she added.

In fact, the CSWDO is releasing IDs for the members of the solo parents community. This will allow them to avail of the benefits they are entitled to.

Among the beneficiaries of the livelihood program of the city government are solo parents, particularly the Angeleño First Facemask livelihood project.

During the lockdown period, P1,000 cash aid to 5,000 members of the solo parents were also given, amounting to P5 million.
