ANGELES CITY- The Guam National Guard has joined other international groups who trooped to the country to extend “relief and humanitarian assistance” in Northern Luzon areas affected by typhoon Pepeng, the Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) said yesterday.
The 19-man Guamanian group, led by Lt. Col. Hoa Nguyen, arrived yesterday at the Nolcom headquarters in Camp Aquino, Tarlac City for briefing on the situation in Pangasinan, particularly the towns of Urbiztondo, Basista, Sta. Barbara and Bugallon where it plans to conduct relief and other operations, said Nolcom operations officer Col. Gerard Velez. The group also brought medicines.
“These municipalities will be the focus of their free medical and dental mission that will be conducted in cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) composed of active and reservist personnel,” Velez said.
Velez said the contingent from Guam National Guard and the medical officers from the AFP will be “a big boost to the total effort of the government in bringing the necessary services to the victims of the recent typhoon”. The Commanding Officer of the Camp Aquino Station Hospital Col. Imelda Dalupang is closely coordinating with the group in case they will need additional doctors to attend to the medical requirements of evacuees and other people affected by the calamities.
He said Maj. Gen. Donald Goldhorn, Adjutant General of the Guam National Guard coordinated with the AFP leadership to offer assistance to victims of the recent typhoon in the north.
“The Guam National Guard has two physicians, two dentists, two nurses, one public affairs officer, and three medics,” said Guam National Guard public affairs chief Capt. Kenneth Oca who speaks fluent Tagalog.
Nolcom chief Maj. Gen. Ricardo David Jr. expressed gratitude over “the overwhelming show of support from various groups” as he also cited the role of the US 3rd Marines Expeditionary Brigade which has been active in rescue and relief efforts for several days now, even since storm Ondoy last month.
David also said that personnel from the Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) and the 522nd Engineer Construction Brigade have been dispatched for clearing operations in Umingan, Pangasinan where many areas were also buried by landslides.
Yesterday, the Philippine Air Force’s 355th Engineering Wing also assisted in the clearing of the Rosales-Carranglan road between Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija, he noted.
