SAMAL, Bataan The local government unit here has issued an executive order banning traditional Holy Week activities and the strict implementation of quarantine and health protocols effective March 23 to April 4, 2021.

Mayor Aida Macalinao issued the order that imposes curfew hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m in all 14 barangays, except for essential travels.

A 24-hour curfew is set for minors aged below 15 years and senior citizens from 65 years and above, except for essential travels as defined in Executive Order No. 41.

Religious gatherings such as Holy Masses and similar activities held inside the church are allowed but with only 30 percent of the seating capacity filled and provided that strict health protocols like wearing of facemasks and face shield with social distancing and hand sanitizing are followed.

The EO temporarily bans Holy Week activities such as processions, visita iglesia, setting up of kalbaryo, pabasa, cenakulo and penitensiya.

Samal is known for putting-up colorful kalbaryos where pabasas are held. Manggagapang, mandurugo and other flagellants carrying wooden crosses are common sights in this town on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Visitors come in droves in Barangay Calaguiman to witness the cenakulo or street play on the crucifixion of Christ where performers, especially the Roman soldiers, wear colorful costumes.

These activities are, however, banned for the second straight year because of the pandemic.

The Iglesia Filipina Independiente in the town following the executive order has informed its members of the prohibition and asked for support of activities allowed in the order.

“Nilagdaan ng ating punong bayan Aida Macalinao ang EO na nagtatakda nang pagpapaliban ng lahat ng uri ng selebrasyon sa labas ng simbahan at binibigyan lamang ang simbahan na magdiwang sa loob nito na ang pwedeng dumalo ay 30 percent lamang ng kapasidad ng mga upuan. Hinihiling ko ang inyong suporta,” parish priest Fr. Roderick Miranda said.
