Six nabbed playing mahjong, ‘tong-its’

OLONGAPO CITY Unrelenting in its anti-illegal gambling campaign, the city police arrested six persons playing mahjong and tong-its in Barangay New Cabalan here.

They were also found in violation of quarantine protocols of social distancing and face masks.

In his report to city director Co. Benjamin Sembrano Jr., Police Station 4 commander Capt. Walter Primero identified those arrested as Helen Ednalan y Bautista, 45; Leopoldo Minimo y Venturuso, 68; Elezalde Meridor y De Guzman, 52; Perla Ednalan y Bautista, 50; Felomina Batilo y Buante, 40, and Feleciano Ednalan y Maguio, 68, all residents of Pinagpala Street, Purok 4, Barangay New Cabalan.

The report said the police were tipped off by a concerned citizen of rampant gambling activities prompting the police to conduct raid in the area.

Recovered from suspects were one deck of playing cards, one mahjong set, P1,250 bet money in different denominations, two wooden tables and seven plastic chairs used.

The suspects are now under the custody of Police Station 4 facing charges for violation of PD 1602 (illegal gambling) and City Ordinance No. 6, Series of 2020 (face mask and social distancing ordinance) before the City Prosecutor’s Office.
