CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) asked the help and support of local chief executives (LCEs) in the province to push for Constitutional Reform (CoRe).

In her message during the CoRe Townhall Meeting, DILG Pampanga Provincial Director Myrvi Apostol-Fabia said local officials play a crucial role in conveying to the people the purpose of the national government to strengthen its capacity to meet the challenges of modern times and the needs of the modern generation.

“As stewards of the government, you are in the best position to see the need for change. With the help and support of all the government officials in the province, we can work together to bring our people to the change that our government wants,” Fabia said.

The director also said the forum aims to provide LCEs with information on the changes or reforms that the national government intends to implement to further strengthen and enhance service to the people.

“While the local officials are vested with powers at present, we are aware that there are many gaps in our existing constitution that need to be addressed or amended to ensure that our local officials are more efficient, effective, and competent,” Fabia said.

DILG said CoRe primarily aims to strengthen local governments by providing greater funding to those in need; as well as a structured mechanism to ensure that those who are most in need are given greater assistance.

“Second is the reform of the current political system in the country. Several reforms to our political parties and anti-dynasty provisions will focus on ensuring that our elected officials are open, honest and transparent,” the DILG official said.

Third, Fabia mentioned, is the opening of the economy for all so that more and more businesses can open up and provide more opportunities to every Filipino.

“Finally, since times are changing, we need to cope up by amending our current systems and procedures through the laying down of a new Constitution for the new generation,” she added.

In closing, she challenged LCEs to walk together as one to bring about a significant change for a prosperous, peaceful and stable nation for every Filipino. – PIA 3
