It gladdens the heart to see scores of our cabalen going out of their way to give help and assistance to the victims of Ondoy and Pepeng. They give donations in cash or in kind; they give their energy and time to the efforts of providing succour to people in their hour of greatest need; they give of themselves in both literal and moral  sense without being asked—nor asking for anything in return.

But though they don’t ask, I feel it is only proper that they deserve to be at least thanked for a good deed—even in a modest way like mentioning their names in this column by way of recognizing their act of kindness and generosity of heart.

The kind reader will note that I will only mention here the names of the giver but not the amount of money that the giver gives.  For what I want to recognize is the act of giving itself, that it is a good deed, that it is an act coming from the pureness of the giver’s heart wanting to help someone in dire need. The amount does not matter, whether big or small.  What really matters is the goodness of the spirit that moves a person to extend a helping hand to another fellow human being in dire need of help.

It doesn’t also matters to me who the giver is, where he is coming from, or what faith or organization, much less what political association or affiliation the giver may have.  What only matters is he/she is lending a helping hand to a fellow human being in hour of greatest need.

And so here are those who gave to the victims of Ondoy through the OPERATION TULONG that was launched by CLTV 36 and RW95.1 under the sponsorship of Sun Star, PAMCHAM, Quota International, Magsilbi Tamu!, JCI, Rotary International, and the Philippine Institute of Civil Enginners, which came to the succour of more than 5,000 families in Arayat, Sto. Tomas, Masantol, Guagua, San Fernando, Mexico, San Simon, Macabebe, Sasmuan and Metro Manila:

There are so many more needing help in various parts of the country, including now those of our kababayans  in Benguet and Pangasinan and other northern parts of Luzon whose lives and property and livelihood were destroyed by Pepeng just two days ago.  But  I also  know that there so many more of our kababayans who will ever be most willing and ready to lend a helping hand to our less fortunate kababayans who are in dire need of help and assistance.

This truth about our character as a people is the bright spot I can see amidst the darkness brought about by the recent calamities that struck our land. With this trait—which without doubt was endowed by our good God upon us—I am confident that we can overcome whatever hardships, whatever calamities that may befall upon our land.

Agyu tamu pu!  Mabuhay!  See you again next week.
