MALOLOS CITY – Nacionalista Party (NP) senatorial candidates said that voters need not be afraid of charter change (Cha-cha) efforts as it will be dead after the 2010 automated elections.

They also stressed that what voters should be wary is the possibility of failure of elections.
“Kahit sino ang maupo after the 2010 elections, I don’t think na Cha-cha and uunahin nila,” said Susan “Toots” Ople, the youngest daughter of the late statesman Blas F. Ople.

She said that revitalization of the economy should be in the first order of anybody who will be elected as President next year.

She added that even if President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is elected representative of the second district of Pampanga and eventually as Speaker of the House of Representatives, things will be different.

“Iba na ang realidad kapag nabago ang liderato, maging sa Kongreso at Senado mababago rin ang mga alliances after the elections,” said Toots who has been advocating for the welfare of laborers and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The young Ople also said that every Filipino should be watchful of the possibilities of failure of the 2010 elections, but Commission on Elections (Comelec) officials earlier said that there will be no failure of elections, the least, they said, could be failure of the machines.

“First thing first, mas dapat nating bantayan ang conduct of the elections to prevent failure of the elections,” she said.

The same was echoed by another NP senatorial stalwart Ramon “Mon-mon” Mitra, the son and namesake of the late Speaker of the House of Representatives during the Aquino Administration.

The young Mitra said that the 2010 automated elections is critical because it is the first time that it will be done in the country.

The young Mitra and the young Ople was in Bulacan on Friday and attended meetings in different town of the province.

Earlier, Liberal Party senatorial candidate Franklin Drilon expressed confidence on the integrity of Comelec chair Jose Melo.

“He is a good person and will do everything within the bounds of the law to make the 2010 automated elections successful,” Drilon said.

He also called on every voter to work hard and help the incoming elections successful.

As this developed, Bulacan election supervisor, Lawyer Sabino Mejarito has been organizing a volunteer group in the province that will assist the Comelec in educating local voters.

The volunteer group, Mejarito said is also seen to help the Comelec during election day.

We tried it in Biliran and we were successful, that’s why I’m initiating the same in Bulacan,” said Mejarito who served as election supervisor in Biliran before his transfer to Bulacan last month.

He also stressed that voters’ education does not only mean equipping local voters on the processes of the 2010 automated elections, but to reinforce their values as well.

“Kung mataas ang values ng botante, iboboto niya ang tamang kandidato at hindi siya papayag sa dayaan at bilihan ng boto,” Mejarito said.
