MALOLOS CITY – Bulacan officials belittle Senator Mar Roxas’s sacrifice in giving way to the presidential bid of party mate Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, saying it was a practical honorable exit.

The same official noted that Roxas decision will have impact on local politics, while leaders of the Sugod Bulacan Movement said they will support the Aquino-Roxas tandem.

As this developed, other aspirants for the for the presidency expressed surprise over the decision of Roxas, who in radio interview yesterday tried to magnified his move as shift from transactional politics to transformational leadership.

“It’s an honorable exit for Senator Roxas,” said Rep. Lorna Silverio (Lakas-District 3).

She added that Roxas’s decision to give way to Aquino might be due to the fact that he is still on the tail end of survey for presidential aspirants.

“Maybe he realized that he is not winnable,” Silverio said.

The same was echoed by Mayor Feliciano Legazpi of Norzagaray, who said that Roxas’ move was “practical.”

“Tama lang ginawa ni Senator Roxas, dahil hindi siya umaabante sa mga survey,’ Legazpi.

Both Legazpi and Silverio, along with Rep. Reylina Nicolas (Lakas, District 4) said that Roxas’s move will have impact on local politics.

“Posible ang re-allingment sa local politics,” Nicolas said but noted that the Liberal Party still have to organize themselves in the province where most officials aree allied with Lakas and Kampi, while some are connected with the former President Joseph Estrada’s Puwersa ng Masa coalition.

For his part, former Mayor Ambrosio Cruz of Guiguinto and the current chair of the Sugod Bulacan Movement said they will support the tandem of Aquino and Roxas saying they fit the call of the country for real change that Filipinos long for.

Cruz said, “That’s the test of a true statesman and Senator Mar showed that he is willing to sacrifice his own ambition for the sake of our country, he is a rare breed and we salute him.”

Roxas and Aquino can both trace their lineage in Bulacan.  Roxas’s grandmother, Donya Trinidad de Leon is from San Miguel town, while Aquino’s grandfather Don Jose Cojuangco was born in Malolos in 1896.

As this developed, former President Joseph Estrada, and Senator Richard Gordon said they were surprised by Roxas’ decision.

“Nagulat ako sa desisyon niya kasi last week lang magkausap kami ni Mar,” Estrada said in an interview with DZBB radio yesterday morning.

He noted that Roxas’ decision will have no effect on the opposition saying “hindi naman nabawasan ang kakakandidato sa oposisyon, napalitan lang siya ni Noynoy.

The same was echoed by Gordon in a separate interview by DZBB, but downplayed Roxas’s decision saying “nagpapalakas lang siguro ang Liberal (Party).”

For his part, Roxas told listeners of DZBB that his decision to give way to Aquino was personal saying: “Pinagpasiyahan ko na ito, kung may magsasakrifice, ako na.”

Roxas also noted the shift from transactional politics to transformation leadership.

He said, “nilinaw  ko sa kanya (Aquino), walang transaction dito, walang palitan ng puwesto.”

He explained that transactional leadership is common in politics especially when a candidate slide down to a position to give way to others.

“I can face all my supporters, wala kapalit ito, sinsero kong ginawa ang pagbibigay daan kay Noynoy, dahil ang mportante ay ang maisulong ang puwersa sa pagbabago,” Roxas said.

Based on the book “Transforming Leadership by Leighton Ford, transformational leadership is described as a kind of motivation which raises consciousness of the people about what they want.

Transactional leaders, Ford said “talk about pay offs, accept rules and values, accept what can be talked about;” while transformational leaders “talk about goals, and changes rules and values and what can be talked about.”
