BAGAC, Bataan – Police on Sunday reported that it held three fishing boats and arrested nine of the 60 member crew while confiscating assorted fish in violation of the illegal fishing law along the municipal waters of Bagac, Bataan.

P01 Oliver Ayadi, Bagac police investigator, said police and personnel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources conducted the operation after Senior Insp. George Santiago received a call that fishermen operate illegally in the maritime waters of barangay Quinawan in Bagac.

With the use of a BFAR speedboat, the team allegedly caught in the act at 12:30 p.m. of Saturday the crew of the three fishing boats catching assorted fish with the use of fine mesh nets and active gear.

Confiscated were 16 coolers and six plastic containers filled with assorted fish from fishing boats Sweet Lyris (trawl), Lydia-88 (hulbot) and Queen Theresa (trawl); all from Navotas City. The fish were donated to the Bataan District Jail in Balanga City.

The chief of police said some 60 persons were in the fishing boats.

Illegal fishing law provides that only a boat captain or skipper and two member crew for each fishing vessel should be detained at the municipal jail while waiting for inquest.

The arrested suspects and owner of the fishing boats are now facing charges for violating of Republic Act 8550 or the Illegal Fishing Act.
