IBA, Zambales (PIA) — The Masinloc and Oyon Bay Protected Landscape and Seascape (MOBPLS) in Zambales received the Gawad Pagkilala Award from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) for its outstanding efforts in conserving marine ecosystems and advancing sustainable fisheries.

MOBPLS is the only marine protected area in Central Luzon and continues to play a key role in protecting the region’s coastal and marine resources.

BFAR recognized the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for intensifying its enforcement and conservation measures that have strengthened the protection of coastal and marine resources.

DENR Masinloc Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer and MOBPLS Protected Area Superintendent Donaver Guevarra expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing that the award reflects the shared commitment of various stakeholders toward environmental stewardship.

“This recognition inspires us to continue our mission of safeguarding our seas and promoting responsible fishing. Protecting fish sanctuaries is not only about conserving biodiversity, but also about ensuring the livelihood and food security of our coastal communities,” Guevarra said.

Meanwhile, DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo reaffirmed the agency’s strong commitment to marine conservation, guided by landmark environmental laws such as the Clean Water Act, the Wildlife Conservation Act, and the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act.

“The DENR has been steadfast in protecting the marine ecosystems that sustain us all. With our laws and conservation programs as our anchor, we remain confident in achieving sustainable management of coastal and marine ecosystems,” Pablo added.

Conferred during the 62nd Fish Conservation and Maritime Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month celebration, the recognition serves as an inspiration for stakeholders to further strengthen their advocacy for marine resource management, in line with BFAR’s call for stronger community participation and cooperation in fisheries conservation.

MOBPLS’ achievement underscores the importance of collaborative and science-based approaches in protecting marine biodiversity, promoting sustainable fisheries, and ensuring food and livelihood security for future generations. (CLJD/RPQ, PIA Region 3-Zambales)
