MARIVELES, Bataan- The provincial government has broadcasted 2.5 million seeds of various species of trees in the denuded mountains of Mariveles as part of its reforestation program to minimize flooding in the historic peninsula.

With the use of the new four-seater helicopter owned by the provincial government and piloted by Capt. Jonathan Estabillo, seeds were dropped on the denuded portion of the Mariveles mountains of more than 900 hectares.

The seeds were composed of acacia, ipil-ipil, cupang, talisay, alibangbang, fire tree, katebang and narra.

After Mariveles, the aerial seeding went on in the mountains of Bagac and Morong towns along the South China Sea. Scheduled for aerial seeding was the whole Bataan Natural Park where from the air, spots of denuded forests were visible.

Engr. Godofredo de Guzman, chief of the environment and natural resources office, said the provincial government has so far broadcasted more than 20 million seeds of various tree species.

Personnel from the provincial agriculture office headed by Imelda Inieto assisted in the preparation of seeds.

He said that this is under the reforestation program launched by Gov. Enrique Garcia and the aerial seeding will go on until the bare portions of the Bataan mountains are fully covered.

The Bataan governor has considered aerial reforestation as the cheapest form of reforestation. “We must do something lest we suffer the fate of Ormoc that was hit by the killer floods,” Garcia said.

Only recently, the towns of Dinalupihan and Hermosa were severely struck by high  flood waters.
