Suspect in killing of Ilocos dad falls

    STO. DOMINGO, Nueva Ecija – A suspect in the killing of a town councilor a day before the barangay elections in Ilocos Norte was arrested by combined forces from the local police and the regional intelligence office in Barangay Poblacion here Tuesday afternoon.

    Chief Insp. Eric De Venancio, town police chief, identified the suspect Stephen Gavino, 38, a resident of Poblacion II, Currimao, Ilocos Norte.

    He was one of alleged killers of Estela Vidad, town councilor of Currimao, Ilocos Norte who was gunned down while manning a family-owned grocery in the said municipality at about 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2010.

    Police said Vidad’s killers who used a 9mm pistol fled on foot after the attack.

    De Venancio said Gavino stayed with the relatives of his wife here a few days before the arrest.

    “They were six or seven in the list based on the arrest warrant but only Gavino went here,” the police chief said.

    Gavino’s arrest was made on the strength of a warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 18 of Batac, Ilocos Norte for the crime of murder under criminal case no. 4765-18. The court recommended no bail for his temporary liberty.

    The suspect was immediately turned over to Camp Olivas in Pampanga for disposition, he said.

    Meanwhile, elements of provincial police’s special reaction team, intelligence branch and Science City police station nabbed a suspect in a string of motorcycle stealing and illegal possession of firearms who escaped from detention in Llanera police station Tuesday.

    Senior Supt. Roberto Aliggayu, Nueva Ecija police director, said Roger Ferrer, a resident of Caputikan, Talavera, Nueva Ecija was recaptured from the residence of a certain Ambrocio Ferrer in Science City of Munoz at about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
