CABANATUAN CITY – A 45 year-old editor who briefly published a local newspaper was killed by still unidentified suspect along Maharlika Highway, Barangay San Juan Accfa this city Sunday night.

The victim was identified as Edilberto Cruz, married, a resident of Purok 3 of the said village. Cruz was a publisher-editor of Salida, a local paper which reportedly dealt primarily on development stories in Nueva Ecija.

Investigation showed that Cruz was driving a single motorcycle with plate no. 5359-CU when the suspect appeared from nowhere and shot the victim using a pistol at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The victim was rushed to the nearby MV Gallego Cabanatuan City Hospital but later died due to three gunshot wounds, police said.

Supt. Eliseo Cruz, city police chief, said investigators are still looking into the motive of the crime. He said he was coordinating with journalists as they conduct follow up investigations.

He said he has not seen a copy of the newspaper published by the victim yet.

But initial information received by the police showed the victim was a construction “foreman.”

“Thorough investigation is now being undertaken by this office to determine the motive behind the incident,” Cruz reported.
