CABANATUAN CITY: A ranking irrigation official allayed fears on Monday that Pantabangan dam would release water that will aggravate the surge of water in low-lying areas, especially Candaba, Pampanga.
Engr. Antonio Nangel, operations manager of the National Irrigation Aadministration-Upper Pampanga River Integrated Irrigation System or NIA-UPRIIS which operates Pantabangan Da, said that the waters that floodd Candaba town in Pampanga mostly from the socalled local flows such as Pampanga River, Penaranda River and O’Donell River.
The water level of Pantabangan as of Monday was read at 119.5, a few meters lower than the 221 automatic spilling level.
But Nangel admitted they plan to release water from the dam “once the flood waters brought by typhoon Ondoy has fully subsided.”
The dam is at zero-release status yet, he said.
Nangel said they will release water at “a very safe level” to ready the huge impounding facility for the forthcoming typhoons as warned by the weather bureau.
This developed as the provincial social welfare and development office or PSWDO provides 400 more bags of rice, and additional supplies of medicines and tent in preparation for the upcoming rains.
Leoncio Daniel, PSWD Officer, said Gov. Aurelio Umali convened the PDCC and laid down the action plans for disaster preparedness. Some sevem barangays from four Nueva Ecija town were affected by Ondoy but no serious injuries to people was recorded, he said.
