GUAGUA, Pampanga — An extraordinary display of religious artistry will unfold at the Sacred Arts of Betis Exhibit, running from March 24 to April 8, 2025, at the Blessed Souls Chapel of the historic Manila Cathedral. The exhibit will highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of Betis, Guagua, a district long celebrated for its masterful woodcarving tradition.

Organized by the Betis Dukit Heritage Foundation, Inc. in partnership with Manduquit Anluagi ning Santa Ursula (MASU) and supported by Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, the exhibit will present the sacred and ecclesiastical woodcarving legacy of Betis, a district long revered for its masterful craftsmanship.

What began as a furniture-making industry has evolved into a distinguished center for religious and installation art, upholding centuries of devotion and artistry.

“This exhibit is more than just a showcase—it is a profound spiritual and cultural experience, a testament to the enduring faith and artistry of Betis,” said Presidential Merit Awardee for Ecclesiastical Art, Willy Layug.

Featuring works by MASU members and renowned Betis artisans, the exhibit will provide visitors with an intimate look at the meticulous craftsmanship that has shaped the town’s identity. A key highlight is its connection to the Dukit Festival, an annual celebration of Betis’ woodcarving heritage established in 2012. The festival, which includes live carving competitions, serves as a platform to promote and sustain the local woodcarving industry amid evolving challenges.

Beyond its artistic and cultural significance, the Sacred Arts of Betis Exhibit will also serve as a fundraising initiative to support local woodcarvers and ensure the continuity of the Dukit Festival. Organizers have expressed their deepest gratitude to the artisans, benefactors, and supporters who have made this event possible, with special acknowledgment to the Manila Cathedral for providing a sacred space where heritage and devotion converge.

Visitors are encouraged not only to admire the masterful carvings but also to reflect on the deep spiritual devotion embedded in each piece. The exhibit is expected to attract art enthusiasts, historians, and devotees eager to witness the unparalleled craftsmanship of Betis’ sacred art tradition.

Among the featured works is Salvator Mundi, a striking depiction of the Child Jesus by Willy Layug, demonstrating the extraordinary skill and devotion of Betis’ master carvers. Press release
