CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — “This has always been my dream – to go back home and create a space that blends heritage and modernity. Through food and art, we can honor our family’s legacy and pass on the stories of our ancestors to the next generation.”
Thus, spoke Aida Lazatin, co-owner of Matuang Bale Cafe and Arts Studio, a veritable reincarnation of the iconic Essel Supermarket into a vibrant cultural hub envisioned as a year-round sanctuary for Kapampangan art and culture in the very heart of the city.
Matuang Bale – old house in Kapampangan – offers a permanent venue for local artists to showcase their work. “The concept of Matuang Bale reminds us to go back home and pay tribute to our roots, a trait that makes the Kapampangan people great,” enthused Marco Lazatin.
Designed as a living art space, Matuang Bale invites visitors to experience the creative process first hand. Currently, it serves as a cozy café offering breads and pastries, complementing Pampanga’s culinary heritage. “I invite everyone to Matuang Bale Café and Art Studio. We have good coffee, good bread, good company, and we just want to feature everything that is Kapampangan,” said Jonathan Lazatin, son of Aida and Marco.
The café not only offers a warm atmosphere with a selection of breads and pastries but also features the Villa Rosa Flower Shop and a showroom displaying world-class pieces by Kapampangan artists.
The journey to establish Matuang Bale was marked by sleepless nights and unwavering determination. “There were sleepless nights, but with faith and family support, we pushed through and completed it,” Aida shared.
Her twins, Hannah Nikole and Hannah Mikaela, were the quiet force behind the project, their support fuelling the family’s perseverance. The transformation of the space was a stunning result of collective effort and a deep-rooted support for Kapampangan culture.
Matuang Bale is more than a business venture; it is a tribute to Kapampangan heritage. “We want to remind people of their roots and the greatness of the Kapampangan heritage,” noted Aida.
This commitment was vividly demonstrated during a fashion show on November 30, celebrating Kapampangan heritage with traditional and modern designs. The event showcased the timeless beauty of traditional Kapampangan designs.
Aida expressed profound gratitude to the mentors who have guided her and her family. She underscored the importance of honoring their parents and mentors, whose wisdom and love for Kapampangan culture have been invaluable. This event was a heartfelt tribute to them, preserving their rich heritage for future generations.
Following this tribute, the runway came alive with colors and textures, each piece telling a unique story. Traditional fabrics intertwined with contemporary designs, creating a stunning fusion that captivated the audience. The Lazatin family, adorned in intricate patterns and vibrant hues, moved gracefully, embodying Kapampangan heritage.
Culminating the afternoon, the opening of Matuang Balewas a living tribute to the past and a hopeful glimpse into the future. History and innovation merged seamlessly, leaving a profound impact on everyone present. The vibrant designs, heartfelt speeches, and sense of community created an unforgettable celebration of Kapampangan culture. Punto Lifestyle Team
