SUBIC BAY FREEPORT – The first-ever Columbia Recyclable Regatta, a boat race utilizing vessels made of recyclable materials, was held here last Sunday under the sponsorship of The Lighthouse Marina Resort.
Thirteen-year-old Ojay Fuentes and fourteen-year-old Jairus Molina from Philippine Canoe and Kayak Federation (PCKF) won the race in the Men’s Division, while Leizel Gilbero and Jaja Arcega from the UP Mountaineers Club won in the Mixed Division.
Eleven teams of two raced across a 200-meter course under the scorching sun, using boats built from scratch with materials that they could find around the hotel. Race rules required that the boats be made of at least eighty percent recycled material.
The winners received P15,000 and gift certificates from Columbia Sportswear.
Organizers said this unique boat race aims to promote concern for the environment, a better understanding of recycling, and developing a love for the outdoors.
The event was also designed to teach participants resourcefulness during sea tragedies, since the race demonstrated how trash materials could be used as simple flotation devices.
Organizers likewise tapped different schools, organizations, and companies to take part in this event to help create better awareness of the benefits of recycling in their respective areas.
The “Recyclable Regatta” also marked the start of Columbia’s “Recycling Talks” program that will be implemented for target schools and organizations. The Subic race is the first leg of the regatta. The second leg will be held on May 19 in Cebu City.
