Senator Angara talks to Councilor Sangil concerning the questionable OJT fees being imposed by schools on graduating students.
ANGELES CITY – Councilor Jay Sangil disclosed on Monday that Senator Edgardo Angara is set to investigate the alleged on-the-job training (OJT) fees being imposed by some schools in Pampanga and even in other universities nationwide.
“Angara, who chairs the committee on education, has assured us that he will seriously look into the matter,” said Sangil who met Angara in a restaurant in Manila recently.
He added that the senator has already scheduled a committee hearing next week.
The city official earlier denounced the questionable OJT or practicum fees ranging from P5,000 to P15,000 being charged by some schools on graduating students.
“This has to stop. We cannot just let these schools impose unnecessary fees without consulting the parents of students,” Sangil said.
He cited reports that these schools impose questionable OJT/practicum fees during summer (April-May) when college students take their internships.
It was learned that some of those who were asked to pay OJT fees are mostly Nursing, Communication Arts, and Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) students.
Sangil recently filed a resolution in the city council requesting Angara to conduct a senate inquiry after receiving reports that even other schools from other parts of the country are reportedly collecting OJT fees.
The council also asked Angara to intervene and possibly sponsor a legislation barring colleges and universities from imposing unnecessary financial requirements on their students.
