2 Chinese yield P8-M smuggled cigs

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Smuggled cigarettes worth some P8 million were seized from two Chinese nationals arrested in an entrapment operation on Bypass Road, Barangay Bulihan, Pulilan, Bulacan Friday.

In his report to Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Region 3 chief Col. Jovit Culaway, CIDG-Bulacan officer Lt. Col. Dave Mahilum identified the suspects as truck driver Chen Peirong, 42, of 1227 Mayon Street, Quezon City, and truck helper Cai Shi Chuan, 39, of Bulatok Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, both natives of Fujian, China.

Mahiulum furthered that the law enforcers conducted “Oplan Megashopper” in response to a complaint from the management of Phillip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corp. (PMFTC ) on the alleged illegal repacking and reselling of their products.

Seized from the two suspects were 260 cartons of Modern cigarettes (50 reams in each carton) and five cartons of Fortune cigarettes worth at least P2,675,000; the P1,000 bill marked money and boodle money; a white Isuzu Elf truck; and another container truck containing 535 boxes of Modern cigarettes worth P5,350,000.

The suspects, to be charged with violations of Article 189 of the Revised Penal Code, RA 7394, RA 8293 and RA 1937, were taken to CIDG Bulacan PFU for further investigation and proper disposition. With media reports
