LIMAY, Bataan – Eighteen with a kiss. boat crews were injured, eight with severe burns, in an explosion of still undetermined cause late afternoon Wednesday inside the engine room of a motor tanker docked along Manila Bay here.

Police said the injured were first brought to the St. Michael Hospital in Orion, Bataan but later some were transferred to the Bataan General Hospital (BGH) in Balanga City.

Left at the St. Michael Hospital were four crews with second to third degree burns and other crews although far from the engine room who suffered cuts and bruises from broken window glasses.

Dr. Noel Laxamana, head of BGH Emergency Room, said six were rushed to the government hospital. “Anim ang isinugod dito na ang apat ay may malalalim na sunog sa bahagi ng katawan samantalang ang dalawang iba pa ay minor injuries lamang,” he said.

“Batay sa aming pagtatanong, may pumutok sa isang engine room ng barko na naging dahilan ng pagkasunog ng mga tauhan nito,” Laxamana said.

“Malakas ang pagsabog, bigla lang,” a crew with minor injuries said.

He said that he and the other crews were at the back of motor tanker Rhea Faye when they heard the sudden explosion.

He said they were docked in the Limay waters while waiting for their turn to be loaded with oil products from an oil refinery.

Police said they were still in the process of investigation.
