MALOLOS CITY—Heavy rains brought by typhoon Maring left 37 barangays in Bulacan inundated, and claimed at least one casualty, while major rivers in Central Luzon are nearing alert levels.

Some minor roads in the province were also rendered non-passable to light vehicles, classes were suspended in three villages in eastern Bulacan, while water in villages in two coastal towns hardly ebb.

Liz Mungcal, action officer of the Bulacan Provincial Disaster Management Office (PDMO), said nine barangays in the town of Calumpit were submerged, plus six in Balagtas town, three in Marilao, 11 in Meycauayan City, six in San Miguel town and two in Guiguinto.

Water levels on the said town range from one to two feet high.

In San Miguel town, Mayor Roderick Tiongson cancelled classes in elementary schools located in Barangays Mandile, Buga, and Penambaran.

Tiongson added that water level in Barangay Penambaran reach up to the knee, leaving local roads not passable to light vehicles.

As this developed, a two-year old girl identified as Nicalyn Aningo was swept away by flood waters in Pulilan town.

PDMO officials said the girl is presumed dead as her body has yet to be retrieved as of press time.

In coastal towns of Hagonoy and Paombong, at least 20 barangays went underwater due to rising sea water and rain waters draining to Manila Bay.

Residents said their houses have been underwater since the weekend.

Meanwhile, the Pampanga River Flood Forecasting  and Warning Center (PRFFWC)  said water levels in major rivers in Central Luzon are nearing alert levels due to heavy rains.

Hilton Hernando, a hydrologist of the PRFFWC, said that water level in their Arayat and Sulipan station along the Pampanga River, Candaba station in Candaba Swamp, and Zaragoza station in Rio Chico River are slowly rising.

He said that flooding is possible in riverside areas of Cabiao, San Antonio and Zaragoza in Nueva Ecija, and Arayat, Apalit, San Simon and San Luis in Pampanga; La Paz in Tarlac; and the towns of San Ildefonso, San Miguel and Calumpit in Bulacan.

Hernando said that the flooding was due to more than 30 millimeter of rains dumped in the region last Tuesday.

He also said that they sent advisories to different disaster coordinating offices in the region to take appropriate actions.
