LIMAY, Bataan – A chief mate died while two seamen were injured when hit by a pressurized liquid hose.

Police Officer 2 Melchor Asebias, Limay police investigator, said chief mate Edilberto Beltran, 57, of Catbalogan, Northern Samar died of severe head and body injuries at dawn Saturday while being treated at the St. Joseph Hospital in Balanga City.

His remains from the St. Peter mortuary in Balanga were brought to Catbalogan.

Wounded were AB seamen Renato Gaa, 31 and Leo Dulcero, 35; both crews of cargo carrier tanker owned by Shogun Ship Co., Inc., reportedly a Filipino-owned vessel.

“Biglang naglabas ng malakas na pressure ang liquid hose at nag-ran wild na parang ahas at tinamaan ang tatlong tauhan ng tanker,” PO2 Asebias said.

“Ang chief mate ay tumilapon at tumama ang ulo sa mga pipelines,” he added.

The hose is being used to transfer Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) from the Petron Bataan Refinery (PBR) pier to their cargo carrier tanker.

The two crews reportedly loosened three of the four bolts of the blind flange preparatory to loading LPG at the S-3 PBR pier Friday night when the liquid hose cover snapped due to the sudden strong pressure. It struck the leg of the chief mate who was supervising, police said.

Police investigator also said that based on their preliminary investigation, no deadly chemicals were emitted and that there was no gas poisoning.

Local journalists tried but failed to get the side of oil refinery officials.
