ANGELES CITY – He is not a mathematician but Councilor Ares Yabut reveals his simple arithmetic on how to beat Pampanga 1st District Rep. Carmelo Lazatin in the 2010 elections.

“It’s simple. Out of the 100 percent registered voters [in the 1st  District], Lazatin has at least 40 percent; Mayor Francis Nepomuceno has also 40 percent and only 20 percent are undecided,” said Yabut in an interview with Punto Central Luzon at his residence in Barangay Cutcut here recently.

Nepomuceno, who will seek reelection, has endorsed Yabut as his bet for the congressional race here.

Yabut said that his ally’s 40 percent will not vote for Lazatin.

“Now, since I always go out and visit barangays which Lazatin fails to do, I am sure that 10 percent of the undecided are mine, giving me a total of 50 percent share,” he said.

Lazatin, who is reportedly not doing the house-to-house type of campaigning “because of his age”, Yabut said, “will only get seven percent [or even less] of the undecided.”

He stressed that a difference of 3 percent would give him the win in the congressional fight.

He added that he also expects a 55-45 percent difference in his favor because “most people in the first district are looking for a new and young leader who will represent them in Congress.”

Yabut earlier vowed to prioritize the lone districting of this city and the cityhood of Mabalacat town which “Lazatin failed to do in the past 21 years as a public servant.”

He however admitted that Nepomuceno’s opponent, Sec. Ed Pamintuan, still has the charisma while the former is known for his infrastructure projects “whether anomalous or not.”

Yabut was referring to Nepomuceno’s sports complex worth P812.6-million (loan from the Philippine Veterans Bank) and the beautification of island rotunda in Barangay Sto. Domingo that reportedly costs more than P20-million.

“But for me, propaganda plus charisma assures you of victory in the coming automated elections,” he said.
