As Tropical Storm Kristine moved across the Philippines, hundreds of communities and families suffered from its devastating impact. The storm made landfall over Isabela and northern Aurora and has affected most of Luzon and Visayas, as well as parts of Mindanao.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, more than 1 million Filipinos have been affected by the storm, with numerous fatalities and several individuals still missing. The hardest-hit areas include Bicol, Camarines Norte, Albay, Sorsogon, Naga, and nearby regions. Due to heavy rains, strong winds, and rising floods, thousands of residents have been displaced. Rescue operations are ongoing but have been slowed by the inability of teams and vehicles to navigate through flooded areas.
Local government units (LGUs) have acted swiftly, urging residents in the storm’s projected path to follow evacuation orders and seek shelter in safe locations. Civic organizations, including World Vision, are closely monitoring the situation and preparing to assist those in need.
World Vision Philippines National Director, Dr. Herbert “Harvey” Quilon Carpio, shares: “World Vision Philippines remains steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding children and families. We are on the ground, monitoring the situation and coordinating with local officials. We are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected. Let us altogether pray for everyone’s safety.”
Meanwhile, World Vision’s initial relief response made its way to the Bicol region.
Carpio added, “World Vision’s prepositioned goods, such as non-food items and hygiene kits, have been dispatched to the Bicol region to help the affected children and their families as these are some of the identified needs.”
We urge everyone to stay vigilant, remain informed, and follow the guidance of local authorities.
