CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – To win for the first time is memorable. To make a repeat is a rare feat. To win for the third time achieving a grandslam status is history.

Village officials and Councilor Jimmy Lazatin and his brother, vice gubernatorial candidate Marco Lazatin led the unveiling of the two-time champion lantern of Barangay Telabastagan on Thursday night at the Essel Subdivision here before the Giant Lantern Festival finals at the Robinsons Starmills mall over the weekend.

“This is important as we try to win for the third straight time. It will be history,” said Councilor Lazatin, who is a member of the Pamisauapan Inc. (PI) which is responsible for the recent victories of Telabastagan in the annual contest.

Councilor Lazatin said their victory would make them “grandslam champions,” disallowing them to join future Giant Lantern Festival contest.

“We will just be guest if we win again this year,” said the two-term councilor.

Councilor Lazatin and Marco, whose family owns the Essel Subdivision and Essel Supermarket, said PI members and Essel and Telabastagan residents had “worked together to defend well the title for the third straight time.”

“This is about promulgating cooperation and unity among us in Telabastagan. This is also reminding people to work hard and try to aim for excellence,” added Lazatin. He also commended Telabastagan officials led by Village Chief Remigio De Jesus for their “invaluable support in the making of champions.”

Designed for the third straight year by Arnel Flores, the round-shaped lantern will be powered by some 8,300 bulbs. Last year’s winning lantern, which also has a round shape, was designed with some 5,000 bulbs.

City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan disclosed that Telabastagan and eight other villages joined the annual contest also known as “Ligligan Parul.”

She identified them as Sto. Nino, Sta. Lucia, San Pedro,   Dolores, San Juan, San Nicolas, Del Pilar and San Jose.

The champion will receive a cash prize of P.1 million. The second and third prizes are P50,000 and P30,000, respectively.
