Now that Governor Panlilio intimated his desire to run for a higher position, different names are now being peddled as his replacement. Lito Lapid started it out by registering anew in his hometown in Porac, Pampanga. This, after losing the election for mayor in Makati City (nobody can beat Mayor Binay in his turf). Then, the Lito Lapid-Dennis Pineda tandem was suggested, to be rebuked later by the Pineda camp.
Then, Oscar Rodriguez’ name become synonymous with Panlilio. However, the good Mayor of San Fernando City insisted that the probability for him to remain as mayor is 95%. If ever he runs for governor, and coupled with the anointment of Panlilio, he would surely get the votes of all the Panlilio sympathizers.
Lately, in Hamon Central Luzon program (June 2, 2009) of John Susi, the tandem of Pampanga Vice Governor Yeng Guiao and Lubao Mayor Dennis Pineda came out in the open. While there is no categorical admission that they will run, the implications of their words and actions speak louder that they will.
On whether who will be the governor and who will be the vice governor, it is evident that Dennis will take the position while Guiao will content himself to being vice… unless the calling of Honorable Congressman would sound sweeter.
It was actually my first time to see and hear these two elected officials speak on issues concerning themselves and the province. Yeng is basically at ease while Dennis still appears nervous.
Yeng’s answers are precise and convincing, while those of Dennis need some polishing. Yeng’s authority and mastery of the issues were very evident.
Being the Presiding Officer of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, he knows well when to disclose and when to keep mum. As for Dennis, I saw him many times scratching his pants with his palm, moved his eyes everywhere, occasionally tapping his shoes, called John Susi such names as Tito Jem, Tito Jam and later, Tito John, and got lost on few words. He has to improve also in his speech and learn to open his mouth to be understood well.
This is understandable for Dennis, being media-shy for a long a time. But despite of all the distractions and intermittent mannerisms, this man speaks from his heart.
His answers, as simple as they may seem, are best understood by their simplicity and sincerity. Despite of his stature, he appears humble and yet, eager to serve more. Are these not the same qualities Filipinos look for their leader? Humility and sincerity.
In anyways, all he needs to do is to get a good PR man who shall teach him the proper demeanor in public and how to get away with distractive mannerisms. He will surely get used to it in a few months. And of course, he should ready himself with more serious and controversial questions when he finally decides to run for governor.
As for Lito Lapid, he has a lot of explaining to do with the plunder charge filed by Panlilio. “Improper timing”, said Lapid’s perceived running mate, Board Member Cris Garbo, adding that “it should have been filed long time ago”.
I should say, it should have been answered by Lapid a long time ago. Until now, the people of Pampanga have not been informed on the defenses of the Lapids on such serious allegations of enriching themselves on these quarry funds.
This was also the main issue thrown against Mark Lapid by Lilia Pineda and Yeng Guiao when they fought in the last election. And I believe this was also the main reason why Mark lost.
Few more months, we will be seeing more faces offering themselves for the May 2010 elections. Issues, whether personal or political, would be thrown and defended.
And of course, all of them would say in their campaigns that they will run to be of service to the poor (which is 85% of us), to unite the Province and its people (as if we have a civil war); to fight corruption and red tape in government (the never-ending issue); to offer themselves cleanly, honestly and with utmost efficiency (are they running to become a saint?)… and after their speeches and introduction of recycled platforms, be ready with the real entertainment, complete with hired stars, dancers and singers. The crowd will cheer, not on the candidates… but on the stars they bring.
Choose your governor wisely!
