Waste diversion launched in Samal town

SAMAL, Bataan: The local government here on Thursday, July 6, 2023, launched its waste diversion program where some wastes were given prices and conducted a sort of fashion show called eco-trashion and a poster slogan contest.

Town Councilor Lito S. Llanda, chairman of the Sangguniang Bayan committee on public utilities and municipal ordinances, authored with the SB committee on environment municipal ordinance No. 23-014 known as the Waste Diversion Ordinance of 2023.

The SB chaired by Vice Mayor Ronnie Ortiguerra passed the ordinance and  approved by Mayor Alex Acuzar.

“Ang layunin ng ordinansang ito ito ay upang masiguro ang maayos na pagsegregate, koleksiyon, paglilipat at pagtatapon ng ating mga solid waste katulad ng papel, karton, single-use plastics at glass bottles,” Llanda said. 

Under the ordinance, five kilos of single-use plastics will be converted into one kilo rice. 

Receipts, brochures, any colored papers will be paid at P1.50 per kilogram; scratch/scrap white papers, modules at P4/kg; cartons, cardboard at P2/kg and scratch /scrap of brown paper, folders and envelopes at P3/kg.

Here is how the process goes, Llanda explained:  Papers, single-use plastics, glass bottles will be brought to the Barangay materials recovery facility for weighing and to be recorded by the Local Solid Waste Environment Office.

After weighing, payment order will be issued to the seller and to be paid in cash by the municipal treasurer’s office. 

The eco-trashion and poster making contests were about wastes. The Samal public information office said that contestants in the eco-trashion show who paraded in the ramp like pros  used recyclable waste and spent minimally for their costumes.

Mayor Acuzar and Vice Mayor Ortiguerra with SB members awarded prizes to the winners of the two contests.
