SAMAL, Bataan- The Bataan Association of Virginia in the Unites States, in coordination with the Philippine Medical Association and the UST Medical Association, all based in Virginia, held a free anti-pneumonia vaccination and medical mission in Samal town Saturday.

Dr. Norma Magpoc, a retired US Navy officer, said they decided to attend first to senior citizens aged 65 and above due to limited pneumonia vaccines.  “But we will also administer vaccinations to those younger should there be an excess of what we brought from the US,” she said.

Magpoc, founder and past president of the UST Medical Association of Virginia, said they were surprised to be approached by long lines of people aged 50 years old and above wanting to avail themselves of the free vaccination.

She explained that one administration of a dose of anti-pneumonia vaccine is enough to last a lifetime. Aside from physicians and Filipino residents from Virginia, some from Chicago assisted in the free medical mission.

Jun Magpoc, travel consultant and husband of the doctor, said that anti-pneumonia vaccine good for 10 persons costs $225 in the U.S. He said that their group vaccinated more than 250 persons, mostly 65 years old and above, in Samal.

Private hospitals and physicians in Bataan reportedly charge more or less P3,000 per vaccination.
