MARIVELES, Bataan – The Bataan Bomb Squad under the Explosives Ordnance Division (EOD) of the Philippine National Police on Wednesday recovered projectiles and mortars used during World War II in Mariveles, Bataan.
Senior Insp. Dennis Orbista, EOD Bataan chief, said the 8 millimeter projectile was unearthed by a buck hoe undergoing ground works at the GN Power Plant, a Chinese-owned firm in Barangay Alas-Asin, Mariveles.
“Gamit itong projectile ng American forces laban sa advancing Japanese warships noong World War II,” the EOD chief said.
Aside from the giant projectile, recovered were five small projectiles, 10 mortars, 12 half-cut mortars and nine white phosphorus (wp), according to Senior Insp. Marlon Cudal, assistant EOD team leader.
Orbista said the five small projectiles and 10 mortars were discovered under the sea in Barangay Sisiman, Mariveles. A junkshop owner, on the other hand, turned it over to the police the 12 half-cut mortars.
Sisiman and Alas-Asin where the 8 mm projectile was found face Corregidor Island.
“Delikado pa rin ang mga projectile at mortars na bagama’t naiputok na eh hindi naman fully exploded kaya may tendency na sumabog pa rin,” the police officer said.
He said the projectile, mortars and white phosphorus will be brought to the EOD of the Philippine Army at Camp Aquino in San Miguel Tarlac.
